Pendennis Castle Dinner Menu for 5th September 1972

The passenger ships in the Union Castle Line were well known for their colourful menus, and for the great variety of choices available. I know, as I was a steward onboard Pendennis Castle in 1972, and served in both the first class and tourist class restaurants. The following menu was available for dinner in the tourist class restaurant on Tuesday 5th September 1972.

  • Hors d’Oeuvre Varies, Baked Grapefruit Jamaica or Pate de Maison
  • Jellied Consomme, Consomme Paysanne or Creme Agnes Sorel
  • Fried Fillet of Dover Sole, Ravigote or Prawns Peri Peri
  • Bouchees Toulousaine, Saute of Venison Bordelaise, Braised Ox Tongue Alsacienne or Supreme of Chicken Stanley, Baked York Ham Christiana or Braised Duckling, Green Peas or Apple Sauce
  • Grills to order – Ham Slice, Fillet Steak, Pork Cutlet or Mixed Grill
  • Potatoes – Noisette, Nature and Baked Jacket
  • Vegetables – Brussels Sprouts, Creamed Sweet Corn
  • Cold Buffet – Roast Turkey with Cranberry Jelly, Ox Tongue with Pickled Cucumber, Roast Sirloin of English Beef with Horseradish Cream, Roast Pork with Apple Sauce, Roast Lamb with Mint Sauce, York Ham with Peaches, Roast Chicken with Waldorf Salad or Veal, Ham & Egg Pie
  • Salads – Seasonal, Espagnole, Judic or Bagration
  • Sweets – Souffle au Liquer, Creme Caramel, Apple Fluff, Pear Melba, Orange & Lemon Sorbets, Vanilla, Banana or Maraschino Cream Ices (with Chocolate, Butterscotch or Melba sauces)
  • Chocolate Peppermint Crisps
  • Savouries (5 minutes to order) – Anchovy Fritters, Croute Croque Monsieur
  • Fresh Fruit, Preserved Ginger or Mixed Nuts
